Wang Yi Calls on the UN Security Council to Send out a Signal of Solidarity on the Issue of Syria's Chemical Weapons
2013/09/24 22:00

On September 22, 2013, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in New York and the two sides had an in-depth exchange of views on Syria's chemical weapons.

Wang Yi said that the prospect for peaceful settlement of Syria's chemical weapons has occurred. The progress is a hard-won result and is in line with the common aspirations and expectations of the international community. What's important now is that the UN Security Council should maintain unity, overcome differences, and form consensus; that the UN Security Council should send out a signal of solidarity to the world. China supports the OPCW to launch the destruction and verification process of Syria's chemical weapons in an objective, fair and professional manner and as early as possible. The Chinese side is willing to send experts to participate in the work. Meanwhile, China supports the proposal of the Secretary-General on the establishment of a "joint mission" on the Syrian chemical weapons. China is willing to actively participate in the process if an agreement is reached by the parties.

Wang Yi said that political settlement is the only way to the Syrian issue in the long run. The destruction of the Syrian chemical weapons should advance in parallel with the political settlement process. China will continue to play a positive and constructive role in this process.
