On September 22, 2013, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in New York.

Wang Yi said that the United Nations is the most authoritative and representative international organization and China supports the United Nations to play an important role in maintaining world peace and development.

On the issue of Syria's chemical weapons, Wang Yi said that what's important now is that the international community should form consensus as early as possible; that the UN Security Council should send out a signal of solidarity to the world. China supports the OPCW to launch the destruction and verification process of Syria's chemical weapons in an objective, fair and professional manner and is willing to send experts to participate in the destruction and verification process. Meanwhile, the destruction of the Syrian chemical weapons should advance in parallel with the political settlement process.

On development issues, Wang Yi said that the theme of this year's General Assembly is about development, which is particularly important to the world, especially to developing countries. China advocates that sustainable development should focus on eradicating poverty and promoting development and put emphasis on balancing economic, social and environmental pillars. China will unswervingly take the path of sustainable development for it will not only benefit the 1.3 billion Chinese people, but also comply with the global trend and direction of development.

The two sides also exchanged views on such issues as the situation on the Korean Peninsula, Afghanistan, and climate change.
