On September 15, Ambassador Zhang Yesui attended the Ambassadors Roundtable Luncheon hosted by the Council of American Ambassadors as the special guest and made remarks on China-US relations.
A stable and growing China-US relationship not only serves the fundamental interests of both countries and peoples, but also contributes to peace, stability and development in the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large. President Hu Jintao and President Obama have reached an important consensus on working together to build a positive, cooperative and comprehensive China-US relationship for the 21st century, which set the tone for bilateral relations to move forward in the right direction. The Chinese side stands ready to work with the US side to strengthen dialogue, enhance mutual trust and further deepen cooperation so as to promote the sound and steady growth of China-US relations, noted Ambassador Zhang.
Ambassador Zhang pointed out that China and the US are each other's second largest trading partner, and China has been the US' fastest growing export market for nine consecutive years. Both countries have stayed in productive consultation and cooperation on major international and regional issues. There is enormous potential in expanding bilateral business relationship. The complementarities of our two economies give tremendous strength to our commercial ties. There are great opportunities for cooperation in areas such as new energy, energy conservation, environmental protection, and infrastructure. It is hoped that the US side will take concrete measures to create sound and fair environment for Chinese enterprises to invest in the United States.
China and the US must enhance mutual understanding and trust and manage our differences well. China unswervingly stays on the path of peaceful development and pursues a mutually beneficial opening up strategy and strives for common development through friendly cooperation with all countries including the United States. Being the largest developing country and the largest developed country, China and the United States do differ in many ways. The key is to treat each other's interests and concerns with respect and as equal partners. We should also properly manage the disputes in bilateral economic cooperation and trade through dialogue and consultation, said Ambassador Zhang.
Ambassador Zhang also answered questions from the audience including Korean Peninsular Nuclear Issue, Iranian Nuclear Issue, RMB exchange rate, investment in the US from Chinese enterprises, the investment environment in the US, the challenges faced by China in its development, the cooperation between China and the US in Africa and the relations between China and the Latin America.
The Council of American Ambassadors was founded in 1983. Its members including the ambassadors retired and on active duty. Former President George H. W. Bush is the Honorary Chair of the Council.
