On September 26, 2025, Minister Qiu Wenxing delivered remarks on “The Evergreen Bond: President Nixon’s Redwood Legacy—A Celebration of China-U.S. Friendship” commemoration event via video link.

Minister Qiu recalled how President Richard Nixon presented the redwood tree as a valuable gift to China 53 years ago, and how the small sapling has grown into a towering tree over the years. Minister Qiu pointed out that China and the United States share extensive common interests and are able to contribute to each other’s success and prosper together. Minister Qiu hoped that both the two countries should take the story of President Nixon’s Redwood as an inspiration and draw wisdom from the history of China-U.S. relations, have the right understanding of each other, encourage people-to-people exchanges, and promote practical cooperation, so as to find the right way for both China and the United States to get along with each other in the new era, jointly write more new stories of friendship, and bring benefits to both our countries and the world.
The commemoration event was hosted by Department of Foreign Affairs of Zhejiang Provincial Government and organized by Foreign Affairs Office of Hangzhou Municipal Government and Hangzhou West Lake Scenic Area Management Committee. About fifty participants, including Chinese hosts and American guests attending the 5th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves in China, took part in the event.
