On October 13, official Twitter accounts of the US State Department posted photos and tweets of Under Secretary of State Jose Fernandez and Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Kritenbrink respectively meeting with Taipei Economic and Cultural "Representative" Bi-khim Hsiao. It was claimed in the tweets that the US commitment to Taiwan remains rock-solid, and the US will further strengthen ties with Taiwan. Separately, it was reported that the US side has invited Hsu Yen-pu, Taiwan's "Army Commander", to visit the US. Such comments and actions of the US side have seriously violated the one-China principle and the provisions of the three Sino-US Joint Communiques, and sent gravely wrong and irresponsible signals to the world. China firmly opposes and strongly condemns them and has lodged solemn representations with the US side.

The one-China principle and the three Sino-US Joint Communiques are the political foundation of China-US relations. Without a solid foundation even a mountain cannot stand firm. American leaders and senior officials have repeatedly stated that the US never has any intention of changing its one-China policy. However, its words and deeds have repeatedly shown that such commitments are nothing but empty words. The US should stop its clumsy tactics of saying one thing while doing another.

We advise the US side to abandon any illusion of using Taiwan to contain China as soon as possible. Any words or actions that challenge the one-China principle and China's core interests will be met with firm responses from the Chinese side. The US should not fantasize seeking China's support and cooperation while wantonly challenging China's red line on the Taiwan question. China will never accept it. No one shall underestimate the Chinese people's strong resolve, will and ability to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity. We urge the US side to take real actions to follow through on the spirit of the phone call between the two heads of state, honor its commitments, and create conditions for China-US relations to return to the track of healthy and stable development.
