On Dec 20, 2024, Mme. Wang Dan, wife of Ambassador Xie Feng hosted a winter solstice cultural event at the embassy. Over 50 female guests from all walks of life in the U.S. and other foreign missions were present.

In her remarks, Mme. Wang pointed out that winter solstice goes far beyond traditional culture and is more about delivering hope and warmth in the coldest time of the year. Winter solstice is viewed not just as a solar term in China but also an important festival, “second only to the Chinese New Year”. This day marks the beginning of cold winter and a new cycle of climate. Everyone begins to looking forward to spring. Chinese winter solstice tradition involves food, drink, health and calligraphy, guided by the philosophy of “harmony between man and nature”. Wang expressed hope for all guests to find a chance to visit China in 2025 to experience Chinese culture.

Her Excellency Ana Irene DELGADO, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Panama to the Organization of American States, said that culture, in its richness and diversity, is a universal language that brings people together, transcending borders and differences. The philosophy of “harmony between man and nature”, so deeply embedded in Chinese traditions, resonates universally. The friendship between Panama and China will continue to deepen.

Madam Carla Canales, Senior Advisor and Envoy for Cultural Exchange of President Biden, recalled her several visits to China and said that culture is like a series of rivers that circle the planet, exchanging while changed by each other. She mentioned that President Xi Jinping and President Joe Biden prioritized people-to-people exchanges when they met in San Francisco. Today’s event is one example to promote cultural exchanges. 

The guests enjoyed Chinese folk music and face-changing art, tasted winter solstice food, tried their own hand to make dumplings, sipped premium Chinese tea and experienced traditional Chinese acupuncture. Through all the activities, they appreciated Chinese traditions and diverse winter solstice culture. Everyone felt the warmth in the event and gained further understanding of Chinese culture and deepened friendship.
