On the evening of September 27, Chinese Embassy in the US held an online reception for the 73rd anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Ambassador Qin Gang delivered a speech. Invited guests, including President of the National Committee on US-China Relations (NCUSCR) Stephen Orlins, President of US-China Business Council (USCBC) Craig Allen, leading representative of overseas Chinese in the US Sue Zhang made congratulatory remarks.

The online reception began with the solemn Chinese national anthem. It was followed by a themed video The Story of China, depicting how the power, the feelings, the beauty and the wisdom of China have contributed to the building of a better world.

In his remarks, Ambassador Qin Gang said, over the past 73 years, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the Chinese people have overcome all difficulties and strived together with unity and fortitude, delivering rapid economic development and long-term social stability, miracles rarely seen in the world. In the past 10 years, socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era, and China's development has made historic achievements and undergone historic changes. The upcoming 20th National Congress of the CPC will formulate a guideline of action and major policies for the next five years or even longer.

Ambassador Qin said, the CPC has followed the people-centered development philosophy. China has made remarkable achievements in poverty reduction, increasing people's income, improving pension and medical insurance systems and fighting against the COVID pandemic. The over 1.4 billion Chinese people are striving for common prosperity with their hard work and ingenuity. The CPC has ensured that the people are the master of the country. It has kept improving the system of socialist democracy with Chinese characteristics and truly practiced the whole-process people's democracy. China never ceases to make progress, and never exports its own political system. Instead, China believes that one should not do unto others what he does not want himself. China objects to the narrative of democracy versus authoritarianism, and advocates the common values of peace, development, fairness, justice, democracy, and freedom for all mankind. The CPC has strived for harmonious coexistence of man and nature, and vigorously promoted green, low-carbon and circular development. It has set ambitious emission reduction goals to ensure the return of blue sky and to protect the clear rivers. The CPC has continuously promoted the building of a community with a shared future for mankind and actively worked for a new type of international relations. It has put forward the Global Development Initiative and Global Security Initiative, and contributed greater Chinese wisdom, Chinese solutions, and Chinese strength to the reform and development of the international system and international governance.

Ambassador Qin expressed heartfelt thanks to people from various sectors who have long cared about and supported the development of China-US relations. He noted that both China and the US are great countries, and China-US relationship is the most important bilateral relationship in the world. Currently, China-US relations are facing severe challenges, but China and the United States have huge common interests and common responsibilities, and cooperation is the only correct choice. The three principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation put forward by President Xi Jinping are the correct way for China and the United States to get along. It is hoped that the US will work with China, strengthen dialogue, reduce misunderstandings, manage differences, expand cooperation, and bring China-US relations back to the track of healthy and stable development at an early date. This serves the fundamental interests of the two peoples and also meets the general expectation of the international community.

Stephen Orlins, President of the National Committee on US-China Relations, said that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the Shanghai Communique and the NCUSCR hosting the Chinese Ping Pong team’s visit to the United States. The Shanghai Communique laid the political foundation for productive bilateral relations. The exchange of young Ping Pong players launched people-to-people exchanges, which have produced much benefit for the Chinese and American people. He called on both sides to commit to working together to confront the common global challenges that we face.

Craig Allen, President of the US-China Business Council, said that the scale and the importance of the US-China economic relationship cannot be understated. It serves as the foundation for amicable relations between the world's two greatest economies. Despite the pandemic, American companies continue to do well in China. Nearly 90% of the USCBC members report profitability in the market. The success of American companies is connected to China, and as China has succeeded, so has America.

Sue Zhang, leading representative of overseas Chinese in the US, daughter of General Zhang Zhizhong, sent the best wishes from overseas Chinese in the US to the people of China. She said that in the past 73 years, under the leadership of the CPC, the Chinese people have delivered historic achievements. She hoped that the overseas Chinese will carry forward the spirit of the old generation of political leaders from both the US and China, cherish the hard-won friendship between the two sides, and bring bilateral relations back on the right track.

After the speeches, the video “My Chinese Album: 50th Anniversary of Giant Pandas in the US” reviewed the two peoples’ friendship brought by these lovely “envoys” since China and the US began cooperation on giant panda conservation half a century ago.

Afterwards, Chinese and American artists jointly presented a splendid performance. The China National Acrobatic Troupe presented “Moonlight on the Lotus Pond” with beautiful artistic conception and superb skills. With the accompaniment by the US-China Music Institute of the Bard College Conservatory of Music, American soprano Esther Maureen Kelly and baritone José Rubio sang the Chinese song "Ocean, My Hometown", breaking cultural barriers with infinite affection. The China Oriental Performing Arts Group performed “Galloping Horses”, where the dancing and percussion were exquisitely choreographed. Tian Chao, a dulcimer player living in the US, together with Grammy Award winners Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer, jointly performed an innovative arrangement of “August Flower”. The China National Symphony Orchestra performed the classic piece “Ode to the Red Flag”, expressing incomparable love and loyalty to the motherland.

The reception concluded with the melody of "I Love You China".

The online reception was broadcast live on the Chinese Embassy social media pages, media outlets including People's Daily, Xinhua New China TV, China Media Group CCTV&CGTN, China News Service, China Daily, Dragon TV's Kankan News, as well as the social media of the World Affairs Press.
