New Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng: I Have Come Here to Safeguard the Interests of China and To Promote China-U.S. Exchanges and Cooperation

    Xie Feng, the new Chinese Ambassador to the United States arrived to assume office on May 23. He told the Chinese and foreign media and people from various sectors present at the JFK airport that he is greatly honored to be appointed by President Xi Jinping as the 12th Chinese Ambassador to the United States. As a representative of the Chinese people, he has come here to safeguard the interests of China, and he takes this as his sacred responsibility. As an envoy of the Chinese people, he has come here to enhance China-U.S. exchanges and cooperation, and he takes this as his important mission. He said that the China-U.S. relationship is faced with serious difficulties and challenges, and his appointment means to him not only honor, but also enormous responsibilities. He and his colleagues will carry out their responsibilities and live up to their mission with diligence and fortitude.

    Ambassador Xie Feng emphasized that President Xi Jinping has put forward the three principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation, which represent the fundamental and right way for the two countries to get along with each other in the new era. He expressed the hope that the United States will move in the same direction with China, and act in the common interests of the two peoples and the world, properly handling important and sensitive issues, such as the Taiwan question, in accordance with the principles in the three Sino-U.S. joint communiqués. He urged the United States to work with China to enhance dialogue, manage differences and promote cooperation, so as to bring China-U.S. relations back to the right track.

    The new ambassador said that it had been 13 years since he last worked in the United States. Over the past 13 years, the world has gone through great changes, and so has the United States. During his current posting, he looks forward to engaging extensively with the American people from all walks of life, observing and learning about the country at a close distance, and exploring ways to deepen exchanges and cooperation. He also looks forward to making friends with the media and people from other sectors. He called on everyone to work together to contribute to China-U.S. relations with insights and actions as well as courage and grit. He thanked everyone again for the care and support and said he is looking forward to seeing them again soon.
