On May 4, Ambassador Qin Gang met with U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), and exchanged opinions with him on China-US relations, the Ukraine crisis and the Taiwan question.

Ambassador Qin said, as two major countries in the world, China and the US should work together, on the basis of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and non-confrontation, to take China-US relations back to the right track.

Ambassador Qin elaborated on China’s position on the Ukraine crisis, stressing that loving peace and opposing war are China’s cultural tradition and diplomatic philosophy. China firmly advocates respecting and safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries, including Ukraine. China has been calling for ceasefire and working hard to promote peace talks, and has also actively provided humanitarian assistance to Ukraine. At the same time, China maintains that the legitimate security concerns of all countries, including Russia, should be respected. China calls on all parties concerned to jointly implement the Global Security Initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping, adhere to the vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security, and pursue a way to achieve lasting peace and stability in Europe and the world after the crisis.

Ambassador Qin stated China’s position on the Taiwan question, emphasizing that there is only one China in the world, Taiwan is part of China, and the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing the whole of China. The one-China principle is the universally recognized norm governing international relations and a general consensus of the international community. It is the political foundation for China to develop bilateral relations with other countries.

Upon inquiry, Ambassador Qin also pointed out that China-Lithuania relations have encountered setbacks because Lithuania has renounced the political commitments it has made on the Taiwan question in the communiqué on the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, blatantly violated the one-China principle, and grossly interfered in China’s internal affairs. The Chinese side has to make necessary responses.
